On December 3rd 2018, the UNITED NATIONS (UN) GENERAL ASSEMBLY adopted the resolution “SPORT AS AN ENABLER FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT”.

According to a press release from the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ATHLETICS FEDERATIONS IAAF   the resolution encourages member states and relevant stakeholders to emphasise and advance the use of sport as a vehicle to foster sustainable development, acknowledging the role played by sport and the Olympic movement.

It affirms the contribution of sport in promoting tolerance and respect and empowering women and young people, individuals and communities. The resolution also places a spotlight on the impact sport has on health, education, social inclusion and the fight against corruption, encouraging governments’ efforts to focus on these topics.

For several years  the IOC has been contributing to the movement that uses  sport as a tool for development. The cooperation between the IOC and the UN has played a key role in the recognition of sport as a means of promoting international development objectives.

The year 2015 saw a historic moment for the Olympic and sports movement, when sport was officially mentioned as an “IMPORTANT PARTNER” for sustainable development within the UN 2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.
